Episode 03: Narrative Shots

The Language of Film explained

Most camera shots and movements we see in a film are there to invisibly unfold the story for us. But sometimes a shot or camera move is specially chosen to give us an important piece of information and draw us into the story. Rather than just showing us things, they serve a specific purpose in the narrative.

In this tutorial you will learn:

  • The various types of narrative shot
  • How narrative shots are used to get inside the heads and hearts of the characters in the story
  • How narrative shots involve the viewer in the story
