Grandmother Cricket [Abuela Grillo]

Denis Chapon, 2009

Abuela Grillo is the grandmother of a cricket whose songs can bring rain to this earth. She settles in a village where she is initially welcomed; overjoyed, she sings and sings until the valleys are flooded. The villagers get angry and chase her away.

Alone and rejected, she falls into the clutches of corporate giants who hold her captive, exploiting her gift by harnessing the rain she creates to bottle and sell the water. As a result, those whose lands had plenty start to run dry. Who will save them? But, more importantly, who will save Abuela Grillo?

Based on the Ayoreo myth of the Direjná, the ancestral owner of water and rain, this film is an icon of Latin American social cinema due to its criticism of water privatisation and the exploitation of natural resources.
