Mairi MacLeod and the Metagama (1998)
Two Canadian cousins are visiting Barvas on the Isle of Lewis, home to their great grandmother, Mairi MacLeod, before she emigrated. Staying at a B&B run by Gaelic-speakers, the old lady who runs it recognises Mairi from an old photograph, and recalls the story of Mairi’s decision to move overseas. Mairi and her husband had been struggling to make ends meet: an ad for free passage to Canada aboard the Metagama therefore proved irresistible. The pair weren’t seen again. She reveals there’s still a MacLeod living locally, who’s summoned to meet their Canadian relatives.
